Franklin, TN – Ravenwood got some revenge tonight beating Franklin 2-1 to win the 6-AAA Region title. The win made the season series between the 2 teams 1-1-1 and earned Ravenwood a home Sub-state game this Saturday after graduation.
Ravenwood had to come from behind and withstand 2 halves where Franklin had full control for a better part of the first 10 minutes of each half.
Starters for the game included Jack Hyatt in goal, Pedro Cobo, Dylan Thomas, Spencer Layland, and Baker Lockhart on the back line. TJ Munzel, Jesse Boone, Blake Sams, and Chris Barker in the mid-field. Jake Hill and Grayson Hetherington started up top.
In the first 3 minutes of the game, Hyatt was called on several times to make very aggressive clearing plays and saves to keep Franklin from taking an early lead.
Although Ravenwood got a chance in the 4th minute, the early momentum was with Franklin.
Franklin would get rewarded for the run of play in the 14th minute resulting in the games first goal.
Play evened out after that and the half ended with Franklin ahead 1-0.
Franklin came out in control in the second half but Ravenwood would silence the home crowd, in the 50th minute, when TJ Munzel deflected the ball at the top of the 18 and raced after it as it moved quickly away from the goal. Then, he gathered it, picked his head up, looked for a teammate and calmly chipped a ball toward Jake Hill. Hill would rise up, connect and head it past the outstretched arms of the Rebel goalkeeper for the goal tying the game at 1.
Just 3 minutes later, Franklin would send a dangerous cross into the Raptor box where Hyatt would get a hand on the ball, collide with the far goalpost and keep Franklin from taking a 2-1 lead.
At this point, you could see and feel the Raptor momentum building. Clearly energized by the first goal and the big save by Hyatt, Ravenwood’s midfield started to control the game with Sams, Barker, Boone, Munzel, and Bickel doing some quality work.
The effort would pay off just minutes later when Bickel streaked down the right sideline and sent a long cross to Hill who headed the ball past Franklin’s goalie giving Ravenwood the 2-1 advantage and his second header of the night.
Hill must have been tired of reading about all Munzel’s and Bickel’s good header goals so he decided to do a little heading of his own. We’re not sure how, but somehow Hill’s sister got both goals on video?! Here they are:
Then, Hill almost played the assist roll when he sent a similar long ball to Boone who just missed a header of his own.
Franklin would not go quietly. They started to press and several times, if not for the solid play of the backline of Lockhart, Cobo, Thomas, and Spencer, Franklin may have tied the game.
In the 62nd minute, both Lockhart and Layland were called on to make big clears of the ball.
In the 69th minute, Blake Sams sent Chris Barker on a breakaway but Barker ripped a shot off the crossbar.
During the last 10 minutes, several Raptors really found whatever they had in their tanks to help ensure the hard fought team victory.
Although the last 15 minutes were nerve racking, Raptor fans got to enjoy the 10 second countdown and celebrate the Region title!
