Diego Zuazua Breaks Ravenwood's Cross Country Record at Blazing Jesse Owens Classic
When Conley Chitwood graduated from Ravenwood in 2012, he held the school record in the 1600m, 3200m, and 5K/cross country. Those records are now all gone as freshman Diego Zuazua had a 51 second PR to finish with a scorching 15:47, beating Chitwood's 15:54 by seven seconds. Fellow freshman Matthew Rigsby ran a 16:12, a 20 second PR. Zuazua and Rigsby are the #1 and #3 ranked freshman in the state of Tennessee. Also scoring for the Raptors were Nassim Zahrir, Everett Jackson, and Sebastian Bielski, with Blake Brown finishing sixth for Ravenwood. Always putting his teammates first, Blake took time to help up Nassim after he fell heading into the first turn. Five of the six varsity runners clocked their season bests.
As they have been all season long, the Lady Raptors were led by senior Julia Henderson, who broke 19:00 for the first time with an 18:56. Sophomore Jamie Blaylock was just four seconds behind her and freshman Ella Kuban broke 20:00 for the first time with a 19:22. She is currently the #7 freshman in the state. Addison White, Caroline Groves, and Elise Strevell all turned in their season bests, making it six out of six for the girls.
There was plenty of excitement in the JV races as well. Sophomore Carter Myers, coming off of a broken ankle in the spring, ran 17:38 to earn his first varsity letter. He was closely followed into the chute by Jack Dang, Brian Duncan, Kevin Frost, Bryce Akridge, and Nolan McGinnity, and Trevon Miller as seven of the seven JV scorers ran PRs.
In the final race of the lady the JV Lady Raptors posted the best team finish for Ravenwood as four runners broke 21:00. Olivia Derr, Madilyn Garrison, Taylor Hill, and Homecoming Haley Berger all earned varsity letters with their strong races. Hannah Williams, Hannah Katelin Reynolds, and Elena Vidal rounded out the scoring as Ravenwood finished runners up.
All told, 23 of 24 boys and 21 of 22 girls ran their best times of the season. Ravenwood cross country will be back in action in two weeks at the Mid State Cross Country Association championships in Smyrna, TN.
