Lady Raptors Run Down Eighth Consecutive Top Ten Finish at State, Zuazua First Freshman
It's hard to believe that it's only been two and a half months since the first cross country meet of the season; time flies! Saturday marked the end of another successful campaign for both of Ravenwood's teams as they competed for the state championship at the Steeplechase in Nashville.
The girls ran at 10:00 a.m., so while they faced some big puddles and a good bit of mud, it would only get worse as the day wore on. As she has all season, senior Julia Henderson led the way, finishing in 20th place. Jamie Blaylock was right on her heels, just five seconds and four places behind. Capping an outstanding freshman season, Ella Kuban finished 31st in 20:06; she was just the fifth freshman across the line. Olivia Derr and Caroline Groves were fourth and fifth for the Lady Raptors with Taylor Hill and Addison White coming in sixth and seventh for RHS. The girls finished 6th overall, a pretty amazing feat considering they were without four of their original top seven from August. Their resolve has done nothing but impress Coach Mueller, who's been raving about their grit and determination all season long.
Running without their #2 runner and with only two runners who'd run at state before, the boys team was focused on gaining valuable experience as they look to the future. And the future is now - freshman Diego Zuazua finished 21st overall in 16:42, beating all the other freshman in the race. Everett Jackson, Nassim Zahrir, Nathan Tidwell, and Kevin Frost rounded out the scoring for the Raptors with Sebastian Bielski and Carter Myers finishing sixth and seventh. All but Tidwell will return in 2016 and the guys are already talking about returning to the top five at state, where they resided in 2013 and 2014.
For the first time in over five months, the cross country teams can finally relax. Not for long though... track conditioning starts soon!
