Lady Raptors Sweep Cherokee Classic, Varsity Boys Runners Up

With no meets scheduled for the last three weekends, Ravenwood's cross country runners have gotten in their fair share of tempo runs, hill workouts, and of course, their weekly long run. Their hard work paid off Saturday with a tremendous showing at the Cherokee Classic in Knoxville, Tennessee. The varsity girls began the day with a strong race, placing two in the top 10 and four more in the top 30. Freshman Annika Sleenhof led the way with a 19:11 to finish fourth, becoming the fastest Ravenwood freshman ever in only her second career race. Julia Henderson placed sixth in 19:26, a 22 second PR for the junior. Hailey Erickson, Addison White, Olivia Kuban and Sabrina Florey finished in a nice pack, placing 22nd, 24th, 25th, and 27th. Olivia Hetherington crossed the line 7th for the Lady Raptors, all of whom clocked their season bests. The girls defeated second place Christian Academy of Knoxville by a staggering 54 points, their biggest win since they won the 2012 AAA state championship by 59. The varsity boys ran next, and while they did not win, their performance was no less impressive. All six boys ran PRs, with senior Matth Rainey narrowly missing the school record with a smokin' 16:01. Jack Strevell was right behind him at 16:07, followed by Richard Guiry (16:18), Austin Chitwood (16:31), Nathan Tidwell (17:00), and Nassim Zahrir (17:11). The boys finished in second place behind Daniel Boone, runners up at state the past two years and currently the number one ranked team in the state. Buoyed by the great efforts of the teammates, the JV girls stormed out of the gate to crush their opponents, finishing 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 to record the first perfect score in the history of Ravenwood cross country. Bailey Fohr won, with Alyssa Parker, Lauren Yeager, Hannah Williams, Haley Berger, Kendall Pace, and Hannah Belcher following her to Ravenwood cross country immortality. Almost all of the 15 JV Lady Raptors ran PRs. The JV boys' field boasted nearly 200 runners, and while the boys didn't win, they ran a slew of PRs. Sophomore Kevin McGinnity ran 17:44 to lead the way, with Daniel Nicastro, Everett Jackson, Blake Brown, and Evan Bentley rounding out the scoring. All ran their PRs, as did the bulk of the 13 JV Raptors competing in the race. All Ravenwood runners now have their sites set on the Trinity Valkyrie Invitational in Louisville, where they hope to run even faster on Saturday morning.
