Raptors, Lady Raptors Headed to State Again
For the 13th consecutive November, Ravenwood's Lady Raptors will compete for the AAA state championship in cross country. Running on a beautiful fall day at the Steeplechase in Nashville, the girls took five of the top thirteen places to finish second to Brentwood in the Region 6-AAA championship. Senior Julia Henderson was runner up and Jamie Blaylock and Ella Kuban joined her on the All-Region team. Olivia Derr and Addison White were 11th and 13th to complete the scoring and Caroline Groves and Hailey Erickson ran 6 and 7 for Ravenwood.
After the race was over, Coach Mueller noted how proud he is of the 2015 cross country team. "To lose your #1 and #2 runners before the first meet and still compete at this high a level really shows the character and grit of these girls. We ran today without three of our top four finishers from tryouts and still placed three girls on the All-Region team and are currently ranked in the top ten in the state. I'm not sure what other program could lose so many top runners and still be this good."
The boys faced a stiff challenge from an up-and-coming Franklin team as they looked to qualify for state for the sixth consecutive year. Once again, freshman Diego Zuazua and Matthew Rigsby led the way, finishing 4th and 6th to earn All-Region honors. Everett Jackson, Nathan Tidwell, and Sebastian Bielski rounded out the scoring as Ravenwood held of Franklin over the last half of the course. Carter Myers and Nassim Zahrir were sixth and seventh for Ravenwood.
The JV races showcased Ravenwood's depth as the girls finished 1-4 to win handily. Taylor Hill was the overall winner, followed by Elise Strevell, Haley Berger, and Madilyn Garrison. Hannah Williams, Hanna Cho, and Lauren Shepard were next into the chute. It was the fourth consecutive year a Ravenwood girl won the JV region championship.
The JV boys were runners up, with Kevin Frost, Evan Bentley, Nolan McGinnity, Jack Dang, Blake Brown, Brian Duncan, and Bryce Akridge placing 1-7 for the team.
