Raptors seize victory thanks to late error, drop Wilson Central 8-3
The Raptors performed well in a rain shorted home game against a tough Wilson Central team that slugged out 10 hits.
Jeremy Thurman started the game on the bump and threw 2 and 1/3 giving up 3 hits with no runs. The Raptors started the scoring in the first when Ryan Beamish singled to lead off the game. He then stole 2nd and with a Hagan Severance walk, there were 2 on with Bryce Denton coming to the plate. Denton singled to right field scoring Beamish and bot Denton and Severance advanced on an error by the right fielder.
The game stayed 1-0 until the 3rd when Wilson Central squeaked out a couple of hits off Kory Hayes who replace Thurman in the inning. Coming out of the top of the 3rd the Raptors were down 2-1 but this would not last. In the bottom of the 3rd, after a Severance fly out, Denton tripled to Center field on a ball that was kept in the park only by Mother Nature's wind. Davis Elliott then did his job with a sac fly to right, scoring Denton. Next up was Daniel Hopfensperger who singled to left field and was followed by a Micah Kaczor walk. The game was almost blown open at this time when Matthew Vezina hit a hot smash down the 3rd base line, only to have the Wilson 3rd baseman make a great back hand and nip Vezina on the throw, ending the inning with a 2-2 score.
The game stayed tied until the bottom of the 4th when the Raptors took advantage of a key error by the Wilson 2nd baseman. The inning started with 2 quick outs for the Raptors, bringing up the top of the lineup. Ryan Beamish walked and stole second. Severance then hit a smash that the Wilson 2nd baseman could not handle scoring Beamish and Severance advanced to 2nd. Denton was then intentionally walked bringing Elliott to the plate. Elliott singled to right2 lead.
The top of the 5th started with the Central hitters rattling off 3 straight hits and then with a walk pushed a run across. The rains came at this point and the decision to call the game gave the Raptors a 8-3 win.
The Raptors ended up scoring 8 runs on 7 hits, led by Bryce Denton with 2 including a 3 bagger and Luke Yates with a double to the wall. Both Raptor pitches were hitting their spots with Thurman throwing 25 strikes on 38 pitches and Hayes 18 strikes on 26 pitches.
The next game will be Monday 4/14 against Independence High School at Raptor Field. See you at the Ball Park!
