Raptors Win Voyles Classic, Lady Raptors Runners Up
In their first-ever race as a member of the Midstate Cross Country Association, the boys and girls cross country teams got their seasons off to spectacular starts at the Voyles Classic in Smyrna. The varsity boys began the day with a win, defeating 55 other schools including three time defending state champions Brentwood High and perennial D-II power Brentwood Academy. Matt Rainey, Richard Guiry, Austin Chitwood, and Jack Strevell all finished in the top 15 and fellow senior Garrett Statum rounded out the scoring for the Raptors, ensuring their 7 point margin of victory. The girls followed with a tremendous race of their own, finishing runners up in a field of 44. Freshman Annika Sleenhof had the fastest debut of any Lady Raptor in history, covering the 5K course in 19:38 to finish 4th overall. Julia Henderson also finished in the top ten, followed by Olivia Kuban, Hailey Erickson, and Addison White.
The JV teams were equally successful as the boys finished 2nd, right behind BA, and the girls won, holding off a late challenge from the Lady Eagles. Scoring for the Raptors were Jack Dang, Kevin McGinnity, Blake Brown, Daniel Nicastro, and Nassim Zahrir. Sabrina Florey won the girls race, with Lauren Yeager right behind her, then Hannah Belcher, Kailey Churchill, and Haley Berger.
All Raptor runners will be back in action on September 13 at the Cherokee Classic in Knoxville.
