Senior Spotlight: Olivia Kuban
Olivia Kuban was a softball player when she came to Ravenwood back in 2012. However, we were all witnesses to her running prowess as she debuted with a sub 21:00 5K, which had only happened once previously. She went on to earn All-District and All-Region honors as a freshman and finished third on the 2012 state championship team. She has courageously battled knee and shin injuries over the last couple years, but that didn't stop her from earning All-MSCCA honors as a junior. She is one of four captains on this year's team.
Why do you run?
I run to be healthier and because I'm always happier after I've completed a run. I also do it because I love to be outside and I can think clearly when I'm on a run.
When/how did you start running?
I started running when I was in seventh grade since my mom made me do it. I really hated it so I stopped after that. Then, my freshman year I started running again so I could meet people at Ravenwood and I liked it a lot more for some reason!
What is your favorite workout?
I like running the YMCA trail! But for a workout it would probably have to be the predator run where we start in the back and have to catch up to people.
What advice would you offer a new runner?
My advice is to start out at a low mileage and slowly work your way up or else you'll get injured. Also, if you feel any pain that isn't normal, go cross train instead.
What will you miss the most about running cross country at Ravenwood?
I'm really going to miss everyone on the team!! Not running with them everyday is going to be very sad because we've all gotten so close!
What is on your iPod?
I listen to random music and my preference changes a lot. Nothing really specific but just usually not mainstream music.
What do you like to do besides run?
I love riding horses, hiking, being with friends and family, and watching sunsets!! I also really love traveling out west because it's so, so beautiful and open.
What do you plan to study in college?
I'm not really sure yet because a lot interests me, but I'm maybe thinking about becoming a nutritionist, an elementary teacher, or an equine veterinarian.
