Ravenwood Beats Independence 4-1

by Scott Hill

Independence High School - Ravenwood traveled to district-undefeated Independence High School and came away with a big 4-1 victory.

Starters for tonights game included goalie Emma Petty, Abigail White, Lauren Finan, Blare Gerido, Kelsey Foley, Savannah Harris, Ana Bridgeman, Sierra Hetherington, Karlie Paschall, Savannah Hill, and Claire Fallon.

Senior Blare Gerido and Lauren Finan would set the tone early despite an early goal that put Independence up 1-0. That would be the only blip on a night where the defense stopped one of the mid-states most offensively successful teams. The defensive effort was anchored by the two seniors but Junior keeper Emma Petty would also make big saves and fellow defenders Abby White, Kelsey Foley, and Madison Sumatra would all deliver strong performances.

On the offensive side, Ravenwood came out quickly with senior Karlie Paschall almost scoring a goal in the first 30 seconds. Then, Independence would take control of the game. In the 5th minute, Emma Petty would be called on to stop a breakaway chance by an Indy striker. The game became pretty back and forth with Savannah Hill breaking through for a good chance on goal.

In the 14th minute, Indy would score on a set piece to get their only goal of the game. The lead would be short-lived.

On the rekick, the ball would be played back to Savannah Harris who sent a long ball into the offensive zone to Karlie Paschall. She took the ball, made her moves, and erased the Indy lead tying the score at one. Just four minutes later, She would put her stamp firmly on the game and go far post giving Ravenwood the lead for good.

In the 25th minute, Hill would get her first goal of the game when she took a pass on the left side, took several dribbles and ripped a shot upper 90 giving Ravenwood a two goal cushion.

With Ravenwood on fire, the sprinklers briefly came on to try and cool their momentum. Midfielders Savannah Harris, Sierra Hetherington, Ana Bridgeman, and Emma Thomas made sure the Lady Raptors would go into the half 3-1. Raptor Goalie Petty would also come up big on several more occassions to keep the game from getting close. In this game, Petty used almost every body part to make saves for her team.

With the rekick play working in the first half, Harris and Paschall would add Hill to thei second attempt creating another fantastic give and go scoring opportunity that Hill would finish making the score 4-1.

Harris would make another good defensive play with 12 minutes left when she used a header to clear a dangerous corner kick by Independence. Just one minute later, Claire Fallon would have a great shot go over the goalie's outstretched arms and just off the crossbar.

Lady Raptors Caroline Hopfensperger, Kennedy McCoy, Laura Parrott, Faith Vanston, Emma Thomas, Clara Miller, and Karley Wilson also saw 2nd half action.

With Senior Grace Parsons still recovering from her injury, she was asked about the game and the status of her recovery. "I thought we played really, really well. I have a CT scan October 6th. Hopefully they'll tell me I'm cleared. That's the week before the district tournament."

Ravenwood has two regular season district games left. They play next Thursday at Franklin. Game time is 7pm.

JV played a hard fought game and were rewarded in the final minute when Sarah Cloud passed the ball to Tori Case who sent a long ball to Cassidy Fessmire who scored to win 1-0. JV plays Franklin next Thursday at 5pm.
