Sometimes things just don't go your way. With #1 runner Matthew Rigsby out with a hip injury, the boys cross country team knew they were going to be in a dogfight with Franklin for third place in the Region 6-AAA championship Thursday at Steeplechase. They rose to the challenge, with all seven varsity runners turning in course best times. Everett Jackson (17:23), Kevin Frost (17:24), Carter Myers (17:37), Jack Dang (17:43), and Nikhil Arun (17:47) packed it in for a microscopic 24 second 1-5 split. Nolan McGinnity (17:49) and Blake Brown (18:03) were right on their tails. Despite the boys' heroic efforts, Franklin edged out Ravenwood by three points to qualify for the state meet for the first time since 2007, ending the Raptors' streak of six consecutive berths at state. Although everyone was disappointed in finishing fourth, Coach Mueller emphasize that he is extremely proud of well the Raptors ran. "It was really a great day from a performance standpoint - seven guys, seven course best times. Even going back to our great teams in '13 and '14 I don't think we ever had a 6 and 7 run as well as ours did today."
The postseason started earlier than everyone would have liked, but the good news is that Ravenwood has a strong foundation of returning runners for 2017. Based on times of current 9th-11th graders, the boys are ranked #7 in AAA and 9th overall in Tennessee. Track conditioning is just around the corner!
