Indoor track & field may not be an official TSSAA sport yet, but that didn't stop athletes from all over the state from converging at Vanderbilt University for the third annual Tennessee State High School Indoor Championship.
The girls distance medley relay team of Olivia Hetherington, Maeve Hanley, Elise Strevell, and Ella Kuban led wire to wire, winning their second consecutive state championship in this exciting event. Their time of 13:08 broke the previous meet record, set last year when they won their first championship.
After finishing runner up in the 400m at the outdoor state meet in 2015 and 2016, senior Riley White would not be denied in her quest for a state championship at her best distance. An excellent tactical move and a strong surge over the last half lap put her out of reach for her competitors as she clocked a 57.02 for the win.
The two mile featured two Lady Raptors: Jamie Blaylock and Alex Rosen. Seeded 4th, Blaylock ran strong to capture third place while Rosen finished a solid 10th.
The 4x400m relay team had to adjust when senior Grace Parsons was a no go. Kiara Carter and Taylor Hill ran first and second leg. Third leg Caroline Groves passed two girls and Riley White passed one more, taking the girls from fifth to second in 4:11.08, a good time for February.
Despite only have entries in four races, the girls team placed third overall.
Outdoor track & field season officially begins March 28-29 with the March Madness Track & Field Invitational at Ravenwood.
