Each spring the Eastern Relays attracts some of the best athletes from all over the southeast and midwest. The marquis event is the 3200m, contested Friday night under the lights. This year's race did not disappoint, particularly for the band of five harriers that arrived from Ravenwood. Running in the fast heat, junior Annika Sleenhof went out with the leaders and finished the first mile in 5:10. She finished in 10:32, breaking the previous meet record, her own school record, and snagging a third place overall finish against two of the best runners in the nation, CAK's Rebecca Story and Michaela Reinhart of Lexington Catholic. Teammate Jamie Blaylock also got out faster than usual, finishing strong with a PR of 11:27.
In the second heat, Ella Kuban and Alex Rosen worked together, clicking off ~90 second quarters together before Ella unleashed her kick on the eighth and final lap. Ella came in at 12:00.08 with Alex six seconds behind her.
In the exciting third heat, Olivia Derr successfully employed her cerebral racing tactics once again, opening in next to last place with a 90 on the first lap. Each successive lap saw her move up a few places until she found herself in third with two laps to go. She charged furiously, claiming victory with just a few feet to go. Her second mile (5:54) was 11 seconds faster than her first mile (6:05) as she finished in 11:59.
Several Lady Raptors will be in action again on May 2 at the Great 8 and the full squad will compete in the Charlie Harper Relays on May 5.
