This season has not been easy for the defending state champion Lady Raptors. With three of their top five runners from 2016 nursing injuries, the pressure has ratcheted up on the healthier and younger runners to produce. Saturday's Jesse Owens Classic provided an excellent opportunity and 18 of Ravenwood's 22 runners took advantage, clocking their season best times.
The varsity Lady Raptors began the day with a solid third place showing as runners up Houston became the first Tennessee team to beat Ravenwood since Brentwood Academy at the 2016 Voyles Classic. Senior Jamie Blaylock continued to lead Ravenwood, finishing 22nd in a season best 19:16. Juniors Alex Rosen (19:30) and Olivia Derr (19:42), sophomore Msgana Araya (20:50), and senior Carson Everman (20:53) all ran their season bests and Elise Strevell (20:52) was close to hers.
The JV race was particularly exciting as freshman Isabella Sleenhof pulled away from the field to win in an impressive 20:57. Taylor Hill, Ansley Baine, and Hanna Cho joined her in the top 15 as Ravenwood won for the second consecutive year. Elena Vidal, Ella Rhoades, and Katie Schmidt were 5th, 6th, and 7th for the Lady Raptors.
Both squads will be back in action October 14 as the varsity girls look to defend their MSCCA title and the JV girls compete for their third win of the season.
