It's become routine, but that doesn't make it any less exciting. On a cool Thursday morning at the Steeplechase, Ravenwood's Lady Raptors earned their 15th straight trip to the state championship meet with a dominant showing at the Region 6 Large championships. Senior Annika Sleenhof channeled her inner 1988 Kirk Gibson, overcoming injury to win the meet for the third time in her career. Though her time of 19:09 is far from her PR, she was able to finish and barring any further setbacks, should be able to compete again at state. Her teammates turned in tremendous performances with Jamie Blaylock (3rd), Alex Rosen (4th), and Olivia Derr (7th) all finishing in the top ten to join Annika on the All Region team. Newcomer Msgana Araya was Ravenwood's 5, followed by Elise Strevell and Carson Everman. The same group will look to bring home the Lady Raptors' fourth state championship (and second repeat) next weekend at the Steeplechase.
The JV meet marked the first time since 2011 a Ravenwood runner didn't win individually, but the team did win the unofficial team championship, led by Bella Sleenhof, Taylor Hill, Hanna Cho, Ansley Baine, Ella Rhoades, Maeve Hanley, and Elena Vidal. The girls were all smiles afterwards as they've earned their first break since conditioning started in late May. Huzzah!
